If your mouth opens less widely than it used to, and spicy food burns in a way it never did, that is not sensitivity. It is a condition worth catching early.
It was a pleasure visiting Dr Manthan Desai for a dental check-up. He is very knowledgeable and thorough with the evaluation.Bhavika Gulati — Google review
Oral submucous fibrosis is scarring of the lining of the mouth caused mainly by areca nut, found in gutka, pan masala and supari. It causes burning with spicy food, a stiff mouth and gradually reduced mouth opening. The scarring does not usually reverse by itself, stopping the habit is essential, and it carries a raised risk of oral cancer, so it needs monitoring.
Oral submucous fibrosis, usually shortened to OSMF, is a scarring disease of the lining of the mouth. Healthy, stretchy tissue is gradually replaced by stiff fibrous bands, in much the way a scar on skin is tighter than the skin around it.
The main cause is areca nut, the supari in gutka, pan masala and many paan preparations. Tobacco often goes with it and adds its own risks, but the areca nut alone is enough to cause this.
Try to put three fingers stacked vertically between your upper and lower front teeth. Most adults manage this comfortably, which is roughly 40mm of opening.
Two fingers means the opening has reduced. One finger means it has reduced a great deal. If you cannot manage three, it is worth being examined, whether or not anything hurts. Write down what you can do today, because the change is slow and easy to miss.
OSMF is a potentially malignant condition. That means the affected lining carries a higher risk of developing oral cancer than normal tissue, and it needs to be examined regularly rather than treated once and forgotten.
This is not said to frighten anyone. It is said because the people most at risk are usually the least likely to come in, and because mouth cancer caught early is a very different conversation from mouth cancer caught late. An oral cancer screening is a few minutes of looking and feeling, and it costs nothing like what it saves.
No treatment works while the cause continues. Every approach to OSMF starts with stopping areca nut and tobacco, and the honest truth is that this is the hard part, not the clinical work.
Two things help more than lectures. First, knowing your own number, the mouth opening you measured above, because watching it shrink is more persuasive than any warning. Second, treating the habit as a dependency rather than a weakness, which means help, substitutes and a plan rather than willpower alone.
The scarring that has already formed does not usually reverse on its own. Treatment aims to stop progression, improve opening, and keep the tissue under review.
Severe cases needing surgery are managed with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. What a dental assessment here gives you is the diagnosis, your measurement recorded properly, screening of the whole mouth, a biopsy where anything looks suspicious, and a plan.
Small studies have looked at turmeric, triphala and aloe vera, and some report symptom improvement, mainly in burning. The evidence is limited and none of it replaces stopping the habit or being examined. If they make your mouth more comfortable, there is no harm in them alongside treatment. There is real harm in using them instead of it.
The staining that comes with these habits is surface staining, and a scaling and polishing removes most of it. Worth knowing: people often come asking for the stains to be cleaned, and the examination that goes with it is how this condition gets picked up early.
An examination includes measuring your mouth opening, examining the lining of the cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth and throat, and feeling the neck. If anything looks or feels suspicious, a biopsy is the only way to be certain, and that is better done now than worried about for a year.
The clinic is on RB Mehta Marg in Ghatkopar East, open until 9 pm Monday to Saturday.
Mainly areca nut, the supari in gutka, pan masala and paan. Tobacco frequently accompanies it and adds further risk, but areca nut alone can cause the condition.
Scarring that has already formed does not usually reverse. Treatment stops it progressing, improves mouth opening through exercises, injections or surgery, and keeps the lining under review. Stopping areca nut and tobacco is essential for any of it to work.
Try to fit three fingers stacked vertically between your upper and lower front teeth. Most adults manage it. Two fingers or fewer means the opening has reduced and you should be examined.
No, but it is a potentially malignant condition, meaning the affected lining carries a higher risk of developing oral cancer than normal tissue. That is why regular examination matters, even when nothing hurts.
Small studies suggest they may ease burning, but the evidence is limited. They do not replace stopping the habit, exercises, or being examined, and relying on them alone allows the condition to progress.
Most of it does. It is surface staining and scaling and polishing removes it. The examination that accompanies the cleaning is often how fibrosis is spotted early.
