Bleeding gums: when it is normal and when it is not

Gum disease is as common as tooth decay, and far easier to ignore — because for a long time it does not hurt.

Gums should not bleed when you brush. Bleeding is the earliest visible sign of gum disease, and at that stage a simple scaling can reverse it. Left alone it progresses to the bone, and bone that has been lost does not grow back.

Why gums decide whether you keep your teeth

People worry about cavities and ignore gums, which is the wrong way round in the long run. Gum problems are as prevalent as tooth decay, and good gum health is the sound foundation teeth need. A perfectly healthy tooth is still lost if what holds it fails.

The signs, in the order they usually appear

  • Bleeding gums — usually the first thing anyone notices
  • Bad breath that does not respond to brushing or mouthwash
  • Mobile teeth — a tooth that moves slightly when pressed
  • New spacing appearing between teeth that were previously tight
  • Loss of teeth

By the time the later signs appear, the disease has moved from the gums into the bone. That condition is commonly called pyorrhoea, and it is the point at which treatment becomes surgical rather than preventive.

The unglamorous thing that prevents most of it

Scaling and polishing, twice a year. It is done with ultrasonics to remove plaque, tartar, hard deposits, stains and soft deposits — the things brushing cannot reach. A simple procedure like teeth cleaning can do miracles for gum health, and it is the single most cost-effective appointment in dentistry.

The short version
  • Healthy gums do not bleed when brushed
  • Scaling twice a year prevents most gum disease
  • Bad breath, loose teeth and new gaps mean it has already progressed
  • Bleeding gums can be treated by laser without surgery
  • When it has already gone further

    Laser therapy without surgery

Treatment of pyorrhoea and bleeding gums without surgery, using a laser, is one of the advantages laser dentistry brings.

    LANAP

Laser periodontal therapy combines the proven methods of traditional gum surgery with the precision of laser dentistry. Beyond the added comfort and shorter recovery, it saves gum tissue that would otherwise be removed to treat the disease. Treatment is almost painless with long-lasting results.

    Flap surgery

Where the disease involves the bone, flap surgery treats what the laser alone cannot reach.

    The connection people miss

Gum health is not only about teeth. It determines whether implants succeed, whether veneers look right at the gum line, and how a smile ages. Almost every other treatment sits on top of it.

If your gums bleed when you brush, that is worth an appointment — not a change of toothpaste.

    Common questions

Is it normal for gums to bleed when brushing?

No. Bleeding is the earliest visible sign of gum disease. At that stage a simple scaling can reverse it.

How often should I have scaling done?

Twice a year, ideally, to keep gums in good health.

    What is pyorrhoea?

Gum disease that has progressed from the gums into the bone. Symptoms include bleeding gums, bad breath, mobile teeth, new spacing between teeth and tooth loss.
